Research Highlights Advantages of Girls' Schools

Research draws on PISA data to underscore benefits of single-sex education for girls
A study commissioned by the International Coalition of Girls' Schools (ICGS) has highlighted the benefits for girls in attending single-sex schools.
The Positive Effects of the Girls’ School Environment: An Analysis of PISA Data, published in summary form at the bottom of this page, drew on data published by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).
"Findings trended overwhelmingly positive across a number of measures for those students attending girls’ schools"
Among many positives, the report found that:
- 77% of girls’ school students reported having self-confidence
- 75% of students at girls’ schools say they have developed a sense of purpose and meaning, and have a clear sense of what gives meaning to their life, compared to 69% of co-ed students
- 67% of girls’ school students indicated that they enjoy reading, higher than girls at co-ed schools
- 54% of girls’ school students noted higher teacher engagement than their co-ed counterparts
- Students at girls’ schools replied positively 74% of the time to questions about teacher clarity, higher than co-ed female student responses
- 45% of girls’ school students reported that they do not regularly experience disruptions in the classroom (their co-ed peers reported significantly more classroom disruptions)
- Students at girls’ schools indicated more frequently than girls at co-ed schools that they made friends easily, felt like they belonged, and that other students seem to like them
