Empowerment Day: an Opportunity to Reflect

Martin Luther King Jnr's birthday provides platform for celebration

On Thursday 15th January, the anniversary of the birth of Martin Luther King Jnr, Norbury High invited students to reflect on equality, justice and their personal commitment to change.

On Norbury High's Empowerment Day, which celebrated one of our key values, students and staff were invited to leave their uniforms at home and come to school in clothes that made them feel empowered. Some chose cultural dress, others business attire; many opted for something less formal but nevertheless significant. There were presentations, a competition and a special lunch.

The achievements of a number of influential figures, Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg and locally born Michael Owuo Jnr – better known as the recording artist Stormzy, provided inspiration for students to work on their own modern-day versions of Martin Luther King Jnr's famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
